The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2005)

(62% cabernet sauvignon and 38% merlot) Black cherry, licorice and menthol aromas. A supple, pliant midweight from nicely ripe fruit. Features firm minerality, sweet tannins and good length but could use more personality.

2001, 2000 and 1999 Bordeaux (May 2002)

(under the direction of microbullage-meister Stephane Derenoncourt, this has been racked only once) Medium ruby. Ripe aromas of red berries, coffee, spicy oak and game, with a suggestion of almost exotic merlot. Spicy red fruit, coffee and oak flavors are currently a bit disjointed. But here the tannins seem a bit riper than those of…

Carmignano, Montecucco and Tuscany’s Unrivaled Diversity (Mar 2024)

Hauntingly dark and alluring, the 2021 Colore entices with a blend of dusty violets and lavender, giving way to dried blueberries and sweet smoke. It washes across the palate with textures of pure silk, finessed and lifted in feel, with depths of tart wild berry fruit that saturate. Brisk acidity adds balance, and hints of…

La Lumière Noire: 2019 Burgundy – Côte de Nuits (Dec 2020)

The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis Village has a well defined bouquet with black cherries and touches of cassis fruit. Quite high-toned but nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with sweet ripe tannins, lightly spiced black fruit with a strict, black olive-tinged finish. Give this a couple of years in bottle.

1998 and 1997 Red Burgundies (Mar 2000)

Ruby-red. Initially reticent nose opened with aeration to show superripe aromas of crystallized raspberry, dark chocolate, coffee, mocha and spicy oak. Thick and very concentrated; will give great early pleasure due to its compelling sweetness. The ’96 and ’95 are much more closed now, notes Sylvian Pitiot, regisseurof Clos de Tart. Finishes very long, with…

2018 Tuscany Preview (Feb 2021)

The 2018 Masseto is going to be an absolute thrill for readers who follow this iconic Bolgheri Merlot. Silky, mid-weight and supremely gracious, the 2018 reminds me of the 2004 in its aromatic intensity and classic, refined feel. Inky red/purplish fruit, cedar, lavender, espresso, sage and mint are some of the many aromas and flavors…
