The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2005)

Ruby-red. Ripe black fruit nose shows a distinctly medicinal aspect. Suave and smooth in the mouth, but quite dry, with a flavor of bitter chocolate. Offers good breadth but limited sweetness of fruit. Finishes with substantial tongue-dusting tannins.

Bordeaux 2020 – The Southwold Tasting (Nov 2024)

The 2020 Beychevelle has an open-knit, very well-defined bouquet with pure black cherries, bilberry, veins of blueberry and crushed violet. There's just a touch of new oak still waiting to be assimilated. The palate is lavish and very ripe, displaying black fruit tinged with notes of fig and date, turning almost exotic toward the lascivious…

Napa Valley’s Thrilling 2018s & 2019s, Parts 1 & 2 (Jan 2021)

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is sensual and polished. Bright acids lend energy as this super-finessed Cabernet opens in the glass. Crushed red berry fruit, cedar, rose petal and mint all open with a bit of coaxing. The 2018 is going to need a number of years to be at its very best. It is…

2012 & 2013 Napa Valley: Too Close to Call (May 2024)

The 2012 Insignia is in great shape today. Bright acids lend tremendous energy to a mid-weight Insignia that is more about finesse rather than power. Sweet red-fleshed fruit, cedar, tobacco, mint and rose petal are all beautifully delineated. There’s not much left to say. The 2012 offers tons of pure pleasure.

Vertical Tasting of Phelps Insignia (Apr 2016)

Saturated ruby. Very ripe aromas of black raspberry, musky espresso and mocha, but the 14.6% alcohol is in line with other recent vintages. Fleshy, plush and sweet, showing a distinctly wild, gamey aspect to its dark fruit and espresso flavors. This viscous, full-bodied wine is wonderfully sweet and sexy today. The big, building back end…

2013 Napa Valley: Once Upon a Time in America… (Oct 2015)

Just bottled, the 2012 Insignia is rich, voluptuous and racy to the core. Raspberry jam, mocha, wild flowers, spices and espresso are laced together in a sensual, enveloping Insignia that should drink well with minimal cellaring. I imagine the 2012 will reward readers with a long drinking window of pure pleasure. Today, it is a…
