A Century of…Fives (Jun 2025)

The 2005 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is drinking beautifully. It delivers a lovely nose of red cherries and redcurrants, quite plush in style, though the passing of 20 years has lent it a melted quality. The palate is opulent but fresh and nicely delineated. The fruit verges on blueberry and cassis as the wine becomes supple…

2006 and 2005 Red Burgundies (Mar 2008)

Deep ruby-red. Superripe aromas of black cherry, chocolate and minerals. Velvety in texture and compellingly sweet, with considerable power to its black cherry and chocolate flavors; faint whiff of prune. In a very ripe and powerful style, but here there’s more middle-palate stuffing to support the serious tannins. This may need a decade of aging…

2008 Red Burgundies (Mar 2011)

Palish medium red. Pure, ethereal aromas of blueberry, pungent minerality and rose petal; this makes the Chapelle smell advanced in comparison. Tightly coiled and taut, with outstanding verve to its sharply delineated flavors of crunchy dark berries and minerals. A classic expression of Gevrey-Chambertin, with a very long, rising finish featuring very suave tannins.

The Last Supper…For Now (Apr 2020)

The 2008 Puligny-Montrachet Clos de la Mouchère 1er Cru put in a seriously good performance. It is limpid and silvery in hue, and sure, there remains a patina of oak that slightly obscures the delineation, but it meliorates in the glass and gorgeous oyster shell and flinty scents emerge. The palate is commendably fresh and…

White Burgundy 2009 and 2008 (Sep 2010)

Rather inexpressive on the nose, hinting at soft citrus fruits. Then powerfully minerally in the mouth in spite of a rather silky texture, with strong acidity contributing to the impression of energy. Still youthfully compact, and best today on the very dry, very long finish, where the wine’s superb density calls for extended aging. The…

Marquis d’Angerville: Volnay Clos des Ducs 1920-2010 (Dec 2016)

Harvested 19th-24th September: A very distinctive nose of spice and cinnamon. The fruit is gorgeous, very round. This is a really harmonious well-balanced wine with a silky, supple mouth coating texture. Drinking beautifully now, I expect the 2002 will hold for years because of its balance.
