2000 and 1999 Red Burgundies (Mar 2002)

Deep red. Aromas of cassis, black cherry, roasted strawberry, licorice and woodsmoke. A bit disjointed today, with the wine herbal element clashing with its roasted, tarry oak. Like a few of these ’99s, this is not showing the texture and breadth it displayed a year ago from barrel, perhaps a result of filtration (some Faiveley…

Now, For My Latest Trick: Burgundy 2022 (Jan 2024)

The 2022 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru now includes 0.6 hectares of vine. There is a touch of reduction on the nose, though that does not disguise the intense blackcurrant and raspberry fruit, a touch of potpourri emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with candied orange peel on the entry, excellent structure and finely…

Now, For My Latest Trick: Burgundy 2022 (Jan 2024)

The 2022 La Romanée Grand Cru had just a very slight reduction on the nose. There is incredible intensity though, a mixture of red and black fruit, incense, bunches of roses and candied orange peel. It just seems to grow in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, an unerring sense of symmetry,…

2004 and 2003 Red Burgundies (Mar 2006)

Good bright deep red. Complex, expressive aromas of raspberry liqueur, currant and musky underbrush. Dense, plump and sweet, but with good ripe acidity giving it plenty of life in the mouth. Today, the wine’s dusty tannins have not yet harmonized with the wine’s acids.

Value Through Time: Burgundy 1932-2016 (Aug 2021)

The 2002 Chambolle-Musigny Les Feusselottes 1er Cru has a wonderful, quite sensual bouquet laden with red cherries, kirsch and orange pith, gaining aeration all the time in the glass. The palate has good grip, almost Morey-like in terms of backbone, a liberal sprinkling of black pepper and a smudge of dark chocolate toward the finish…

2003 and 2002 Red Burgundies (Mar 2005)

Medium red. Very ripe aromas of strawberry, raspberry and minerals. Then lush, silky, sweet and suave, with musky flavors of red berries, spices and red pepper. Distinctly fatter and more pliant than the Chaignots. Here, too, the tannins are quite fine.
