2005 Bordeaux: Here and Now (Apr 2021)

The 2005 La Dame de Montrose is a brooding, rustic Saint-Estèphe. Mid-weight structure suggests a more elegant wine, but the 2005 is marked by strong gamy, animal notes that make it feel rather burly. There is enough depth to support at least a few more years in bottle, but I don’t see this improving.

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

(54% cabernet sauvignon and 46% merlot) Bright ruby-red. Raspberry and flowers on the nose. Juicy, leanish and very fresh, but not at all underripe. There’s good flesh lurking, but, like the grand vin, this is a bit austere today, even a tad spiky. Finishes with hints of dark fruits and chocolate.

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

(a 50/50 blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot) Ruby-red. Coolish aromas of black cherry and licorice. Supple, fresh and fruit-driven, with enticing floral lift to the sweet, pliant flavors. Finishes with ripe tannins. Excellent for this second wine.

The 2019 offers modest mid-palate weight and…

2010 and 2009 Northern Rhone Wines (Mar 2012)

Dark purple. Aromas of cherry compote and cassis are brightened by a zesty mineral quality. Rich but lithe, offering gently sweet black raspberry and cherry flavors and a biting note of cracked pepper. Shows a touch of smokiness on the seamless, nicely persistent finish.

2006 and 2005 White Burgundies (Sep 2007)

Spicy aromas of soft citrus fruits and hazelnut. Fat, supple, sweet and rich, but a bit less pure than the Tillets. There’s a slight bitter edge to the orange oil flavor. From another barrel: Purer on the nose and palate, with a more obvious hazelnut character. But still not as precise as Roulot’s best ’06s….
