Dealing with the New Paradigm: Burgundy 2018 (Nov 2022)

The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a seductive, plush nose laden with pure red cherries, cranberry and wild strawberry fruit. Nicely integrated new oak, quite luxurious in style. The palate is well balanced with fine tannins, crisp acidity (perhaps acidified?) with just a little shrillness towards the finish. It does improve with aeration and develops…

La Lumière Noire: 2019 Burgundy – Côte de Nuits (Dec 2020)

The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a leafy bouquet that opens nicely with aeration, traces of black tea and white pepper. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, quite structured with a slightly austere finish. Tapers just a little on the finish, which might be due to post-bottling discombobulation, hence the plus-sign against my score.

Dealing with the New Paradigm: Burgundy 2018 (Nov 2022)

The 2018 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru is very candied on the nose with perhaps too much blue fruit for my liking, rendering it quite Syrah-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins, grippy with liquorice-tinged dark cherry fruit on the finish that shows just a little dryness. Trying a bit too hard compared to…

La Lumière Noire: 2019 Burgundy – Côte de Nuits (Dec 2020)

The 2018 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru has a much more cohesive bouquet compared to the Charmes-Chambertin with more intense fruit – black cherries and raspberry, touches of bergamot coming through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, supple and lithe with impressive depth and persistence towards the spicy finish. Excellent.

Herding Cats: Burgfest 2020 – The Reds (Oct 2024)

The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has slightly darker fruit on the nose: blackberry leaf, cranberry and a touch of sous-bois. It opens nicely in the glass, and the oak is well integrated and becomes more opulent. The palate is medium-bodied with a fresh entry and sour cherry mixed with graphite notes. There may…

Dance the Quickstep: Burgundy 2020 (Dec 2021)

The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is raised with 70% whole bunch and around 80% new oak. Here, I feel that the stems are just jutting out a little more compared to the Grands Echézeaux and slightly obscures the terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip, fine backbone, perhaps without the same…
