Barolo 2007: Greatness in the Making (Feb 2011)

The 2007 Barolo Pajana is a showstopper. Waves of intense, beautifully delineated fruit flow onto the palate as the wine opens up in the glass. Sumptuous and elegant through and through, the Pajana shows marvelous delineation and clean, minerally notes that underpin the opulence of the fruit. This is a marvelous, totally compelte Pajana of…

Bordeaux 2014: The Southwold Tasting (Mar 2018)

The 2014 Coutet has a slightly muddled nose, evident on two bottles that were opened. It eventually sorts itself out, scents of wild honey, dandelion, nettle, quince and melted wax. The palate is very well balanced and showed much more composure than the nose. This displays Coutet’s trademark crisp acidity, quite tensile, very pure with…

2014 Bordeaux: A September Surprise (Feb 2017)

The 2014 Coutet is a gorgeous Barsac. Orange peel, cinnamon, dried flowers and lightly honeyed notes abound. The wine is rich and deeply textured, but not at all heavy. This is a terrific showing from a Barsac that is both highly nuanced and also understated.

Stand and Deliver: 2001 Sauternes (Sep 2021)

The 2001 Rieussec is deeper in color than its peers, though this did come from a half-bottle. The bouquet features marmalade, peach and mango scents, though I aver that it does not deliver the mineralité of other, dare I say, more successful vintages. The palate is much better, offering harmonious honeyed fruit, marmalade, orange peel,…

Focus on Sauternes/Barsac (Jul 2004)

Pale yellow-gold. Superripe nose dominated by honey and marzipan. Hugely ripe and deep, with compelling layers and depth of fruit. Superconcentrated, exotic flavors of apricot, minerals and coconut. Wonderfully chewy, thick and sweet, and extremely long on the aftertaste. A huge wine that will impress early but will really need a minimum of a decade…

A Century of Bordeaux: The Eights (May 2018)

The 1988 Pavie is a vintage I have met a couple of times before, this predating Gérard Perse’s acquisition in 1997. It has an attractive old school nose of light black fruit, roof tiles and cedar; a little diffuse but still fresh. The palate is medium-bodied with a tart cherry entry, wild mushroom and sandalwood….
