La Festa del Barolo 2017 (Oct 2017)

The 1990 Clos-Saint-Denis presents a much darker expression of fruit and more structural heft as well. Black cherry, plum, smoke and exotic spice notes abound. This is another fabulous bottle.

Domaine Dujac Clos Saint-Denis 1970-2004 (Mar 2020)

The 1990 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru did not quite match the stellar performance of the bottle at Tour d’Argent, although it came close. It certainly equaled that previous bottle on the nose, which is simply gorgeous, offering very pure red berry fruit that recalls Armand Rousseau in terms of ethereal purity and precision, and hints…

2001 and 2000 Red Burgundies (Mar 2003)

Bright red-ruby. Lively aromas of blackcurrant, smoke and game. Fat, silky, suave and full; still a bit backward and unforthcoming but seems a bit less minerally and more pliant than usual for this wine at this stage. Finishes long and subtle, with sweet tannins.

2003 and 2002 Red Burgundies (Mar 2005)

Medium bright red. Cool aromas of black fruits, red licorice and bitter chocolate. Very suave on entry, then quite closed in the middle palate; sweet, delicate and perfumed but very young today and in need of eight to ten years of aging. The ripely tannic finishing flavors build slowly and linger long. Offers considerable potential,…

Cellar Favorite: 1966 Dow’s Vintage Port (Oct 2020)

Dow’s 1966 Vintage Port is a gorgeous example of the year, offering intense, deeply concentrated cherry liqueur, toffee, candied fig, maple syrup, datecake and membrillo qualities and a vibrant, spicy overtone. Silky and seamless in texture and finely detailed, it seduces with its balance and elegance rather than opulence and power, fully in keeping with…

Focus on Champagne (Nov 1998)

Complex, fresh aromas of apple, vanilla, toast and brioche. Very intense, very fresh flavors of spiced apple, lemon and clove; tight and taut, with strong acidity and uncanny clarity of flavor. Quite long and young on the aftertaste. Serious juice, with good aging potential.
