Vinous Table: La Taverne Alsacienne, Ingersheim, France (Feb 2019)

For once, the best wine of the evening during a dinner in Alsace was not an Alsatian white. It’s hard to argue with the simply magnificent 2006 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf du Pape Rouge, a masterpiece of refinement and precision. Not at all a blockbuster, but rather a paragon of balance and gracefulness, it offers…

Cellar Favorite: 2006 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Sep 2021)

The 2006 Beaucastel shows the textbook character of a mature Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It has expansive raspberry and cherry scents with suggestions of succulent herbs, pungent flowers, cigar box and just a hint of earth. Vinous Table: Burgundy Charity Auction and Dinner (Jul 2014)

Dujac’s 1996 Clos de La Roche is served last, but its pedigree comes through loud and clear in seemingly endless aromas and flavors that dazzle. 1997 and 1996 Red Burgundies (Mar 1999)

Good full red. Perfumed but subdued aromas of red berries and exotic spices. A step up in fat, thickness and extract; good density and concentration. This has a bit more stuffing than the above, which seems almost too easy for ’96.

2001 and 2000 Red Burgundies (Mar 2003)

Saturated red-ruby. Nicely delineated aromas of black raspberry, cherry and minerals. Bright, high-pitched fruits sweetened by spicy oak. Finishes very suave, sappy and long, with fine-grained tannins. Very expressive for this wine at such a young stage of its evolution.
