2007 and 2006 Red Burgundies (Mar 2009)

Good medium red. Reticent, deeply pitched but pure aromas of raspberry and mocha. Broad and ripe but tight and backward today, and not showing quite the lift or the freshness of fruit of the Echezeaux. With its saline earth tones, this is more savory than sweet. Finishes with firm, youthfully tough tannins. This was my…

2005 and 2004 Red Burgundies (Mar 2007)

(est. 2,500-$2,900) Good deep red. Less expressive but still utterly sexy nose offers plum, raspberry, flowers, smoke and earth. Hints at its superb volume but this is quite closed and tightly knit today, and much less expressive and sweet than La Tache. But this superconcentrated wine seemed to gain sweetness with aeration, showing an increasingly…

2005 and 2004 Red Burgundies (Mar 2007)

(est. 750-$950) Good dark red. Deeply pitched aromas of cassis, earth and truffle (underground aromas while the Romanee-Saint-Vivant is more ethereal, says Villaine). Fat and broad in the mouth, with a strong earth-and-rocks character. Doesn’t show quite the lift of the RSV but this is even sweeter. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins. I suspect I’m…

2004 and 2003 Red Burgundies (Mar 2006)

Very good deep red-ruby. Very ripe aromas of raspberry, earth, Oriental spices, truffle and smoke; shows a slight suggestion of surmaturite but at the same time is perked up by a suggestion of menthol. Then sweet and supple, with very good definition and a light touch for 2003. Finishes with big tannins and impressive density…

2004 and 2003 Red Burgundies (Mar 2006)

($1029) Bright red-ruby. Wonderfully complex nose melds raspberry, rose petal, truffley underbrush and exotic spices. Then almost shockingly fresh in the mouth, with penetrating and rather delicate flavors of red berries and flowers. Still quite tightly wound but already offers compelling inner-mouth perfume. Finishes with building tannins and outstanding verve.

The 2013 & 2012 Red Burgundies (Apr 2015)

The 2012 Corton boasts considerable energy and cut in its finely-sculpted fruit. Intense saline notes and searing tannins confer brightness. Chalk, white pepper and citrus overtones add lift. The Corton is not a shy wine, but its unbridled power needs to be tamed, something that will only happen with at least a few years in…
