Bordeaux 2011: Tales of Tannins and Terroir (May 2012)

(a 78/22 blend of merlot and cabernet sauvignon): Purple-ruby. Perfumed aromas of cassis, coffee and minerals. Bright, juicy and suave, with pure black fruit and mineral flavors complicated by a touch of chocolate. High but harmonious acidity gives this wine a graceful mouthfeel, which I find to be a welcome dimension if a bit atypical…

Squares & Circles: Bordeaux ‘10 At Ten (Apr 2020)

The 2010 Baron de Brane has a very detailed bouquet with pure blackberry, briary, crushed stone and subtle tobacco aromas that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is very well balanced with just a little chewiness to contend with on the entry. Mainly red fruit, lightly spiced and quite minty, I find the finish attractive…

La Festa del Barolo 2015 (Apr 2015)

One taste of Emmanuel Rouget’s 1990 Vosne-Romanée Cros Parantoux is all it takes to completely stop the conversation at the table. How can a wine be so beautiful? Ethereal and weightless on the palate, yet with considerable depth, the 1990 captures the essence of what makes Pinot Noir and Burgundy so compelling. Sweet floral notes…

1996 and 1995 Red Burgundies (Mar 1998)

Excellent brilliant red. Very closed nose hints at licorice; totally different than the Clos Saint-Denis. Fatter and deeper but very unforthcoming; gives a drier impression today. Shows more herbal character than sweet fruit or spice. Densely packed, but lacks the early charm of the Clos Saint-Denis. Certainly difficult to taste today.

La Paulée de San Francisco – Rare Wine Dinner (Mar 2010)

Three 1995s from Dujac all paired beautifully with our steamed bass (Bar de Ligne). The 1995 Clos Saint Denis was the most delicate and forward of the group. Dried cherries, flowers and spices all suggested the wine was close or perhaps slightly past peak. The 1995 Bonnes Mares was decidedly masculine, with awesome power and…

Domaine Armand Rousseau: Chambertin 1988 – 2002 (Aug 2017)

The 1988 Chambertin is powerful and burly, but it also lacks the fruit density of the other wines in this tasting that share its virile personality. Hints of tobacco, smoke and leather add shades of complexity. I suspect the 1988 will drink well for another 15+ years, even if it will probably never reach the…
