The 1990 Clarets…To Have and To Hold (Nov 1993)

Good deep color. Enticing black fruit and gamey aroma. Very sweet but manages some restraint; stylish raspberry fruit calls to mind a Côte de Nuits Burgundy. Decent acidity gives this lovely focus and shape. Subtle, very long finish, with ripe tannins buried in fruit.

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2005)

Bright ruby-red. Aromas of raw currant, kirsch, licorice, mint and chocolate. Sweet, pure flavors of chocolate and black cherry firmed by herbal and peppery nuances and an edge of acidity. Substantial tannins come across as a bit youthfully tough, but the wine finishes with excellent length.

2007 and 2005 Sauternes and Barsacs (Jul 2008)

Full yellow-gold. Expressive aromas of pineapple, coconut, sweet vanillin oak and spices. Then wonderfully thick, fat and sweet, with the exotic coconut character carrying through in the mouth. Finishes saline and powerful, with palate-staining flavors of pineapple, coconut and spicy oak. Conveys a strong impression of solidity.

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2004)

(tasted sur colle Bright medium ruby. Aromas of black fruits, violet, cedar and mint, with a light leafiness. Very suave in the mouth, with a sweetness and softness that belie its very high (82%) cabernet content. This boasts impressive inner-mouth flavor and a distinctive mineral quality. No doubt even brighter than it’s showing on its…

Vertical Tasting of Chateau Cheval Blanc (Oct 2011)

Good full ruby-red. Knockout, complex nose offers vibrant aromas of raspberry, sour red cherry, strawberry, licorice and violet, complicated by white pepper and rose. Then moderately dense and fresh in the mouth, with delicately spicy notes of redcurrant, strawberry, licorice, coffee and minerals. This rather elegantly styled wine finishes bright and fresh, with firm, highly…

Napa Valley’s Extraordinary 2016 Cabernets (Dec 2018)

The 2016 IX Estate is a total knock-out. A wine of exceptional balance and harmony, the 2016 is stunning from the very first taste. Nothing really stands out. Instead, it is the wine’s sense of proportion that makes the most lasting impression. Seamless, layered and voluptuous to the core, the 2016 has so much to…
