The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2004)

Ruby-red. Aromas of kirsch, currant, graphite, minerals, camphor and smoky oak. Subtly sweet and penetrating, with lovely energy and clarity of flavor. Classic claret, finishing lively and very long, with the tannins reaching the front teeth.

Cellar Favorite: 2001 Léoville Las-Cases (Aug 2021)

The 2001 Léoville Las Cases is simply stunning. I was fully prepared to decant it given that Las Cases is almost always a brute in its youth. And make no mistake about it, a twenty year-old Las Cases is still a youngster. Quite frankly, I am not at all prepared for the sheer intensity and…

2013 Bordeaux: Walking the Tightrope (Apr 2014)

The 2013 d’Issan is a fruity, straightforward wine built for near-term drinking. Crushed flowers, sweet red cherries, tobacco and anise linger on a finish marked by elements of dryness.

All it lacks is the energy of previous vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, clearly no sign of any greenness or herbaceous notes. My respectable…

Exploring Northern Rhône Whites (May 2020)

Light, glistening straw-yellow. Ripe citrus and orchard fruit qualities on the expansive nose, along with building floral and mineral nuances. Sappy and energetic on the palate, offering pear nectar, tangerine and honeysuckle flavors that deepen steadily on the back half. Closes with firm grip, a hint of fennel and strong, mineral-driven persistence.

2019 Bordeaux from Bottle: The Two Towers (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Bélair-Monange opens with an attractive burst of fruit. Some of that initial intensity tapers off rather quickly, leaving the 2019 feeling a bit one-dimensional. This showed much better from barrel. The jury is still out for me on Bélair-Monange. I don't see the same quality as is found in neighboring estates nor in…
