Best New Wines from Spain (Sep 2011)

Opaque purple. Ripe blueberry, boysenberry and potpourri aromas are accented by flamboyant oak spices. Lush, sweet and viscous, with deep but energetic blackcurrant, vanilla, mocha and cinnamon flavors. Impressively lithe for its sweetness and power, finishing with excellent clarity and persistence. This is extremely young but very promising.

2017 Burgundy: A Modern Classic (Jan 2019)

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Village, matured in 40% new oak, has an appealing bouquet of vibrant red fruit, revealing just a touch of meat jus in the background. The palate is smooth on the entry with supple tannin and fine acidity; brown spices surface toward the second half. There is good depth here, although a touch…

The Riches and Richness of Chateauneuf-du-Pape (Dec 2019)

Brilliant ruby. Ripe cherry and red berries on the deeply perfumed nose, along with hints of smoky minerals and potpourri. Palate-staining cherry and raspberry liqueur flavors show impressive clarity and depth, and a spine of juicy acidity provides lift and focus. Finishes extremely long and sweet, delivering solid thrust, a hint of candied flowers and…

2016 Bordeaux…It’s All In The Bottle (Jan 2019)

The 2016 Feytit-Clinet is gorgeous. Graphite, sage, menthol, gravel, crushed rocks, new oak and iron give the 2016 its distinctive savory/feral profile. Powerful and yet also translucent, the 2016 conveys intensity, but with less overtness than has often been the case in recent vintages. Feytit-Clinet is usually a big, explosive wine. The 2016 lacks some…

The DBs: Bordeaux 2016 In Bottle (Jan 2019)

The 2016 Feytit-Clinet has a classy bouquet (as usual), featuring blackberry, briar, crushed stone and hints of sea cave and displaying wonderful definition and focus. The palate is very well defined with a fine bead of acidity. More structured than usual, with flecks of dark chocolate, this Feytit-Clinet has great depth but will clearly require…

Test of Endurance: Bordeaux 2014 Ten Years On (Mar 2024)

The 2014 Climens has a slightly more resinous bouquet than its peers, with well-defined scents of dried honey, peach skin and wet wool. The palate is well balanced with a pure and harmonious entry, wonderful acidity and superb precision on the finish that makes you want to take another sip. Superb. Tasted blind at the…
