2011 Red Burgundy: Three Sides of a Coin (Mar 2014)

Red stone fruits, plums, menthol, rose petals and spices take shape nicely in the 2011 Charmes-Chambertin. In 2011, the Charmes-Chambertin is a bit savory and herbal, but it otherswise shows lovely balance and terrific overall depth in a pliant, mid-weight style that is best enjoyed over the next 10-15 years.

2011 Red Burgundies (Jan 2013)

(two-thirds from Mazoyeres): Good full medium red. Expressive nose melds redcurrant, mocha, rust, minerals and flowers, plus a suggestion of game birds. Sweet, smoky and nicely concentrated, with a musky quality to the complex flavors of redcurrant, smoky minerality, mocha and game. Finishes with supple tannins and excellent length. Very Gevrey.

2014 Red Burgundies: Delicious Terroir-Driven Midweights (Mar 2017)

Bright, dark red. Distinctly cooler on the nose than the Clos de Bèze, displaying classic Chambertin scents of black cherry, dried flowers, earth, game and crushed rock. A youthfully reserved wine with great refinement of texture and inner-mouth perfume to its flavors of raspberry, spices and minerals complicated by wild hints of leather and game….

Burgundy With A Bit of Age: 2000-2014 (May 2019)

The 2011 Chambertin Grand Cru is consistent with the previous bottle that I tasted blind in 2014, although I find no reduction now. I maintain that it is a little more feral than other recent vintages with black plum, leather and sous-bois, displaying more amplitude than before. The palate is well balanced but backward, very…

Domaine Rousseau Chambertin-Clos de Bèze and Chambertin (Jun 2016)

Rousseau’s 2011 Chambertin is quite a bit deeper and more powerful than the Bèze in this vintage. Here the flavors are dark, intense and boldly sketched. Black cherry, plum, spices, new leather and pine flesh out in a striking, succulent Chambertin that is surprisingly unevolved. The 2011 has enough verticality and overall structure to drink…

2011 Red Burgundies (Mar 2014)

Bright, deep red, darker than the 2012 today. Wild, soil-driven aromas of blueberry, violet, black pepper, leather and game. Lush, velvety and compellingly sweet, with a magically fine-grained texture and outstanding concentration to the dark berry, violet and earth flavors. This is fat with fruit, and the noble tannins allow the back end to open…
