Bordeaux 2020: Saving the Best for Last (Feb 2023)

The 2020 Beaumont is fabulous in the way it marries power and finesse. Crushed red berry fruit, charcoal, dried flowers, spice and tobacco lend notable complexity. The 2020 has lost some of its youthful fruitiness, but none of its charm or pedigree. This is beautifully done.

Thrice Is Nice: Bordeaux 2020 in Bottle (Feb 2023)

“A good solid Haut-Médoc” is how I described the 2020 Beaumont when I tasted it from barrel. I’ve no need to alter that summation. A mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, this feels cohesive and detailed, not powerful yet it engages the senses. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit. There…

Enticingly Fallible: Bordeaux 2021 En Primeur (May 2022)

The 2020 Beaumont offers ripe black fruit, briar and pine, just like it did from barrel; it’s well-defined, with maybe a little more vigor. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins on the entry, fine acidity and a sapid, tobacco-tinged finish. There is a fine sense of classicism in this Haut-Médoc.

Mâconnais 2022/2023: Don’t Pass Me By (Aug 2024)

The 2022 Viré-Clessé Quintaine, which comes from 6.5 hectares of vine split over 7 parcels, remains on the less for 11 months in concrete tanks with a little SO2 added after the malo. This was bottled a little earlier than usual because the estate was trying to find the right day according to the biodynamic…

Dance the Quickstep: Burgundy 2020 (Dec 2021)

The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Clos de la Garenne 1er Cru has quite a reserved bouquet, well defined, but stricter than the other Puligny ‘20s from Jadot. The palate is well defined with a fine bead of acidity, cohesive with good weight, although the finish requires a little more tension and mineralité. Closure: Diam

Vingt-Vingt Vins: Bordeaux 2020 (May 2021)

The 2020 Charmail has a generous nose with raspberry, wild strawberry and undergrowth scents, the new oak neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins, quite structured and grippy, but showing commendable harmony and persistence on the finish. This is a well-made Haut-Médoc that should give over a decade of drinking pleasure.
