Bordeaux 2020: Saving the Best for Last (Feb 2023)

The 2020 Charmail is powerful, brooding and also a touch monolithic. The 2020 possesses good depth and tons of intensity. Black cherry, gravel, dried herbs and licorice all open in this burly Haut-Médoc.

Thrice Is Nice: Bordeaux 2020 in Bottle (Feb 2023)

The 2020 Charmail has a harmonious, quite floral bouquet with plenty of violet-tinged black fruit. I admire the purity here. The palate is well balanced with pliant tannins, well-integrated oak, a mélange of red and black fruit mixed with blood orange towards the finish. There is something almost “flirty” about this Haut-Médoc!

2020 Bordeaux En Primeur: Almost Back to Normal (Jun 2021)

The 2020 Charmail is an easygoing, lightweight Haut-Médoc. Dried herbs, cedar, mint, crushed flowers and anise lend aromatic nuance. It would be nice to see a bit more body and overall persistence.

The 2014 Blanc de Blancs was bottled in March 2015 and disgorged in March 2020 and is due to hit the market in 2021. There is a touch more red fruit here, hints of white strawberries joining the defined honeysuckle and yellow plum scents. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity,…

Never a Dull Vintage in the Northern Rhône (Dec 2022)

Inky violet color. Heady, smoke- and spice-tinged cherry, blueberry, peony and incense aromas show excellent clarity; mineral and cured meat notes build with aeration. Juicy and energetic, especially in the context of the year, offering sweet red and blue fruit preserves, exotic spice flavors and a suave floral top note. Shows real energy on the…

Dance the Quickstep: Burgundy 2020 (Dec 2021)

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Village is very well defined on the nose, the 30% new oak nicely integrated, redcurrant, cranberry and wild strawberry notes emerging in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a little toastiness on the entry, dark berry fruit with a touch of cedar towards the Morey-like finish. Fine, but it will need…
