Thrice Is Nice: Bordeaux 2020 in Bottle (Feb 2023)

The 2020 Cantemerle was very backward on the nose when I tasted it from bottle. Interestingly, I tasted two samples at different temperatures. The slightly warmer one is quite flamboyant, diametric to what I anticipated. The palate is quite powerful with a sweet core of blackberry and raspberry fruit, blood orange and cracked black pepper….

Vingt-Vingt Vins: Bordeaux 2020 (May 2021)

The 2020 Cantemerle is tightly wound on the nose, requiring a lot of coaxing to reveal the blackberry, cedar and tobacco scents; a touch of iodine emerges with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black and red fruit, a light licorice touch on the back palate and a solid, slightly monochromatic finish. Hopefully this…

Bordeaux 2020 – The Southwold Tasting (Nov 2024)

The 2020 Cantenac Brown has a more reductive nose than its peers—the aromatics are not coming out to play on this occasion. But in the glass, it does have real complexity. The palate is medium-bodied, though not quite as precise as its peers, with a little chewiness toward the finish. This does not engage as…

Bordeaux 2020 – The Southwold Tasting (Nov 2024)

The 2020 Cantemerle has a pastille-like bouquet that lacks the complexity of its peers. The palate is fleshy, ripe and grippy with plenty of red fruit, but nagging green notes poleaxe the finish. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

2020 Bordeaux En Primeur: Almost Back to Normal (Jun 2021)

The 2020 Beaumont is dark, fleshy and wonderfully expressive. Charcoal, scorched earth, lavender and spice give this dark, plummy Haut-Médoc Cru Bourgeois Superieur so much character and personality. Expressive spice and floral notes reappear on the long, beautifully articulated finish. This is a winner.

Bordeaux 2020 – The Southwold Tasting (Nov 2024)

The 2020 Beauregard shows a little overripeness on the nose. It lacks the delineation of the La Fleur de Gay, though it offers attractive boysenberry and bilberry aromas. With aeration, it gains more composure and finesse. The palate is medium-bodied and quite structured with saturated tannins, but the finish tapers quicker than I would have…
