Southwold: 2016 Bordeaux, Ten Years On

The 2016 Saint-Pierre (Saint-Julien) has a serious bouquet with ample blackberry, cedar and sous-bois scents, beautifully integrated oak and real harmony. The harmony translates across to the palate, impressive grip, quite peppery in style, with a very linear, strict but compelling finish. Just getting started… Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

The 2016 Léoville-Barton is fabulous. A wine of breadth and power, the 2016 has so much to offer. The black cherry, chocolate, gravel, smoke and licorice flavors are all boldly sketched. A host of expressive savory and mineral notes develop into the substantial finish.

Nice backbone here, fresh and sapid, with a harmonious, almost briny finish that lends it so much personality. Excellent. Tasted at the 10-Year-On tasting at Bordeaux Index.

Explosive and powerful in the glass, the 2015 Smith Haut Lafitte is going to need time to come into its own. Black cherry, gravel, smoke, bittersweet chocolate, leather, licorice and savory herbs effortlessly fill out the wine’s ample frame. The 2015 is an especially dark, concentrated Smith Haut Lafitte. Swaths of tannin carry the wine…

Bordeaux 2015 At Age Ten (Jun 2025)

The 2015 Smith Haut-Lafitte has a strong peppermint-tinged bouquet that renders it like a McClaren Vale Cabernet! The palate is medium-bodied with plush tannins, fine grip and touches of cough candy toward the finish. It's a bit…bullish? Tasted blind at the 2015 Bordeaux Ten-Year-On tasting.
