Survive Us All: Latour 1858-2018 (Feb 2024)

The 2005 Latour is a huge wine predestined for long-term aging. Noticeably deep in color, it has a showstopping bouquet with intense black fruit, graphite and touches of dried blood and tobacco as it considers moving into its secondary phase. But that’s going to be slow coming…it’s in no hurry. The palate is medium-bodied and…

2005 Bordeaux: Here and Now (Apr 2021)

The 2005 Haut-Brion is a deep, meaty wine. Black cherry, game, smoke, tobacco, licorice, gravel and scorched earth saturate every corner of the palate. The 2005 is inky, creamy and voluptuous right out of the gate. It is also very young and in need of time in bottle. Most wines I tasted for this report…

2007, 2006 and 2005 Bordeaux (May 2008)

Bright ruby-red. Wonderfully expressive nose combines black raspberry, mocha, hot stones, caramel and tobacco. Lush, fat and full but with terrific definition and suavity to its extravagantly dense black raspberry, stone and licorice flavors. As large-scaled as this is, it’s not at all overly sweet. Expands impressively on the back half, finishing with substantial tannins…

Servants of the Seasons: Burgundy 2021 (Jan 2023)

The 2020 Bourgogne Blanc has a fresh, slightly candied bouquet with orange blossom and discrete nectarine aromas. The palate is balanced with a pithy opening, slightly lower in acidity than other vintages with a light spiciness towards the finish. Fine.

The 2009 Clarets (Jul 2012)

Deep inky-ruby. A fresh violet topnote lifts and complicates aromas of dark plum and cassis on the enticing nose. Quite pure in the mouth, with mineral-driven flavors of dark berries, creamy milk chocolate and smoky plum. Lively framing acidity extends the wine’s flavors impressively through a long finish. This has lost some baby fat but…

Enters very rich and dense, showing an ultra-creamy texture to the highly concentrated flavors of blackberry jam, coffee liqueur and milk chocolate. Lively, balanced…
