The 2009 Clarets (Jul 2012)

Ruby-red. Superripe, slightly roasted aromas of cherry, graphite, spices and herbs. Then thick, sweet and very ripe on the palate but a bit youthfully restrained. This full-bodied Canon could use a bit more lift but maintains very good focus. Finishes with substantial ripe tannins and excellent length.

Bordeaux ’08: Far Better Than Expected (May 2009)

Deep ruby. Sweet, ripe aromas of black cherry and balsamic vinegar, complicated by a whiff of game. Pure black cherry, coffee and spice flavors are framed and lifted by very fine tannins and strong but balanced acids. Finishes long and smooth. A fantastic second wine here.

The 2008 Trotanoy is a ferociously backward Pomerol that did not engage at Farr’s horizontal. Another bottle served over lunch that had undergone a long decanting was far more representative. Sweet, lush and broad on entry but with firm acidity giving the wine a light touch, then multilayered and opulent in the middle, with unctuous dark fruit, coffee and earth flavors. Very dark red. Complex aromas of violet, blackcurrant, chocolate, smoke and minerals. Brooding and deep, with concentrated flavors of Black Mission fig, minerals and game framed by a powerful spine of acids and tannins.
