Come On Aline: Château Coutet 1943-2017 (Feb 2024)

The 1989 Coutet has a delightful bouquet with yellow plum, orange blossom and honeysuckle that opens beautifully with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, perhaps more complex than the 1988 with marmalade, quince and spices. There is plenty of freshness on the finish with a saline aftertaste. This is an excellent Coutet and…

2014 Bordeaux: A September Surprise (Feb 2017)

The tannins in the 2014 Carruades de Lafite are nearly buried by the richness of the fruit. Even so, the wine needs at least a few years in barrel, as it is pretty tightly wound at this stage. The combination of plush dark fruit and bright acidity is compelling. Hints of blood orange, flowers and…

Test of Endurance: Bordeaux 2014 Ten Years On (Mar 2024)

The 2014 Carruades de Lafite has a light, earthy, attic-scented bouquet that just needs more fruit to counter the earthy aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, balanced and fresh tannins, though it tapers and dries towards the finish. Drink now. Tasted non-blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

2016 & 2015 White Burgundy (Sep 2017)

Bright medium yellow. Deeper-pitched on the nose than the Maranges La Fussière, with yellow peach, pineapple and spicy oak flavors complicated by flowers and a hint of lichee. Conveys attractive sucrosité but also an element of minerality that gives it a lighter touch than the Fussière (Alexandre Bachelet told me that hydric stress in these…

2012 Red Burgundy: Against All Odds (Jan 2014)

Layers of blue/purple fruit, violets, spices, menthol and new leather blossom in the 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers. Today, the 2012 is expressive and beautiful, with exceptional balance and a total sense of class. The Cazetiers is going to be virtually impossible to resist young, but it also has more than enough depth to develop nicely…

2012 Red Burgundies (Jan 2014)

Deep red with ruby tones. Very dark aromas of crushed black cherry, violet, licorice and tropical dark chocolate. Bright but tight on the palate, showing good juicy energy to the flavors of dark berries, spices and bitter chocolate. Finishes with a powerful tannic spine and excellent length. Very backward today.
