2012 Bordeaux: Messages in a Bottle (Jan 2016)

One of the clear wines of the vintage, the 2012 La Mission Haut-Brion shows off a vertical sense of structure along with imposing tannins and serious depth. The flavors are dark, bold and extremely vivid. Dark red cherry, smoke, grilled herbs, graphite and blackberry jam are some of the many notes that come alive on…

Bordeaux 2012: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (May 2013)

(62% merlot and 38% cabernet sauvignon; 40% of the total production went into the grand vin; 49 h/h): Moderately saturated ruby-red. Inky, medicinal aromas and flavors of fresh blackcurrant, black cherry, minerals and menthol. Typical youthful La Mission on the palate: classically dry and linear, in fact downright austere today. Finishes with building tannins and…

A Century of Bordeaux: The Twos (Sep 2022)

The 2012 La Mission Haut-Brion has a very classy bouquet with cedar and graphite infused black fruit. It is not dissimilar to the 2012 Latour in many ways (in fact, nosing between my two glasses they are almost indistinguishable!) The palate is quite different though – quite precocious and fleshy on the entry, silky smooth…

Roederer Cristal Full Circle: 1993-2015 (Dec 2023)

The 2002 Cristal is just entering its first plateau of maturity. Ripe, exotic and striking, the 2002 is all class. Apricot jam, ginger, spice, dried flowers and mint open first as the 2002 shows off its alluring personality. Pretty floral accents, apple tart and brioche build with time in the glass, bringing out added dimensions…

Focus on Sauternes (Jul 1998)

Gold-edged straw color. Liqueur-like aromas of honey, white chocolate, white raisin, creme caramel and vanilla bean. Big, rich, sweet and unformed, but quite concentrated and nicely balanced. Sound underlying acidity gives the wine good backbone and keeps it reasonably fresh. Finishes with a flavor of golden raisin.

Rockeries in Living Rooms: 1988 vs. 1989 Bordeaux (Jul 2024)

The 1989 Coutet actually surpasses the bottle tasted at the château three years earlier. The nose has orange blossom, mandarin and less honeysuckle; it displays a little more saffron here. The palate is beautifully balanced with a keen line of acidity, marmalade and quince, perhaps more viscous than previous bottles, with a convincingly harmonious finish….
