Test of Endurance: Bordeaux 2014 Ten Years On (Mar 2024)

The 2014 Angélus has an attractive nose with dark berry fruit, chocolate, singed leather and quite pronounced Cabernet Franc scents that lend complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and a very silky texture. Not a powerful Angélus, this is instead refined with impressive mineralité towards the finish. Classy and sophisticated. Just one caveat:…

1998, 1997 and 1996 Bordeaux (May 1999)

Deep red-ruby. Cherry, redcurrant, raspberry, toffee, minerals and iron filings on the nose. Opulent and deep, with a silky, mouthfilling texture and lovely caramel sweetness. Boasts outstanding length for the vintage. Suave and harmonious.

Focus on Champagne (Nov 1999)

Vibrant, elegant, spicy aromas of orange peel, mace, nutmeg and ground horseradish. Brisk, steely and firm, but expands inexorably to fill the mouth. Strong in extract but quite light on its feet. A sinewy Champagne, and strong for the vintage. Very long and very fine on the finish.

Cristal – The 1980s…A Decade of Change (Dec 2018)

2000, 1999 and 1998 Bordeaux (May 2001)

Bright ruby-red. Perfumed, sexy aromas of cassis, roasted plum, violet, pepper and exotic spices. Quite dry but densely packed, with pungent cassis, leather and mineral flavors complimented by sexy oak tones and a hint of dried herbs. Grew fuller and sweeter as it opened in the glass. Finishes with major toothcoating tannins that avoid dryness….

Vertical Tasting of Chateau Mouton-Rothschild (Aug 2011)

(86% cabernet sauvignon, 12% merlot and 2% cabernet franc; pH 3.82; IPT 76; 12.3% alcohol; a 57% selection): Very deep saturated ruby. Archetypical cabernet sauvignon-dominated nose offers fresh blackcurrant, lead pencil and flowers complicated by strong spice notes. Bright and juicy on entry, with very pure flavors of dark berries, underbrush and dried herbs, then…
