1971 x 50 (Feb 2021)

The 1971 Montrose, tasted three or four times, was picked between 25 September and 12 October. It has a lovely bouquet with dark berries, stewed black tea, dried herbs and pencil box, even a sprig of wild mint with aeration. The palate does not quite match the aromatics. The tannins seem to be drying with…

Champagne: The Summer Preview (Jul 2015)

Long-time Chef de Caves Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon has produced yet another in a string of superb Champagnes with the 2007 Cristal. Rich, powerful and enveloping, the 2007 takes hold of all the senses and never lets up. The aromatics alone are captivating, but then the wine opens on the palate, revealing layer after layer of flavor…

Focus on Champagne (Nov 2002)

Pale copper color. Classic Bollinger aromas of toasted nuts, sealing wax and toffee. Then large-scaled, powerful and deep, with strong but integrated acids giving the spice, toffee and brown butter flavors uncanny freshness. With its major chewy extract, this really stains the palate. A classic vintage for Bollinger.

2019 Bordeaux from Bottle: The Two Towers (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Roc de Cambes has come together beautifully since I tasted it en primeur. The balance of dark red cherry/plum fruit and blood orange is so intriguing. The 2019 bristles with energy, much of it surely attributable to the 20% Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend.

Omne Trium Perfectum: Bordeaux 2019s in Bottle (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Roc de Cambes has retained an attractive Japanese nori scent that combines beautifully with the layered black fruit. The palate is very well balanced, poised and spicy, and fresh as a daisy, with fine concentration and a gourmand-like finish that lingers in the mouth. This is a fantastic Roc de Cambes.

Bordeaux 2019: The Southwold Tasting (Feb 2023)

The 2019 Roc de Cambes has an opulent bouquet with blueberry and black cherry scents, floral with a fair slathering of new oak. The palate is medium-bodied, quite toasty in style, with a lot of vanillary new oak, as the nose suggests, which occludes terroir expression on the finish. The bottle last year was far…
