2001, 2000 and 1999 Bordeaux (May 2002)

Medium ruby. Sappy black fruit aromas complicated by leather, dark chocolate and menthol. Fresh and primary but quite firm, even a bit austere, in the middle palate. Offers moderate density and finishes with slightly tough tannins. A more classic but also somewhat harder style of wine than the 2000.

2006, 2005 and 2004 Bordeaux (May 2007)

Deep red-ruby. Musky dark cherry, plum, espresso, graphite and nutty oak on the nose. Supple, plump and sweet, but with a firm spine of acidity. Just a tad cool in the style of the year but with a fine grain to its texture. Finishes broad and dry, with substantial dusty tannins and good aromatic persistence.

Léoville-Poyferré 1936-2018 (Sep 2022)

The 2004 Léoville-Poyferré has a light and airy bouquet with blackberry, antique bureau, forest floor and light fungal aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly dry tannins, a little austere but balanced, though I notice some attenuation and bitterness towards the finish. So-so for this estate. Tasted at the Léoville-Poyferré vertical at the château with…

2006, 2005 and 2004 Bordeaux (May 2007)

Bright ruby-red. Very expressive nose offers redcurrant, tobacco, flowers and nutty oak. Supple, silky and pliant but with good energy to its red fruit and floral flavors. Finishes with broad, sweet tannins and a lingering note of tobacco. This remains quite open and appears to be evolving very much like the 2001.

A Century of…Fours (Jun 2024)

The 2004 Léoville Poyferré has a slight menthol note on the nose, mainly black fruit with a touch of licorice. It just needs a little more delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with a licorice-infused entry. It’s done in a modern style (dare I say, typical of Michel Rolland at that time). An opulent finish just…

2008 Bordeaux: A Day In A Life (Feb 2018)

The 2008 Gazin has a perfumed bouquet with blackberry, raspberry, black truffle and iris, broody at first but responding immediately to aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, initially a little disjointed and I would have liked more depth and concentration to come through on the linear, straight-laced finish. It is a fine Gazin…
