2013 Chablis: Living on the Edge (Aug 2014)

The 2012 Chablis La Forest is one of the most reticent wines in this range. Here it is the wine’s phenolic weight and vertical sense of structure that stand out. Lemon oil, ash, smoke and petrol are some of the many nuances that inform a tightly-wound finish that never really opens up. The 2012 Forest…

Chablis 2013 and 2012 (Jul 2014)

Soil-driven aromas of apple, biscuit, chlorophyll, fern, anise and flowers. Quite rich, sappy and concentrated, conveying a strong impression of dry extract and stony minerality. Powerful, very solidly built premier cru with a very long finish tinged by licorice. I would not be surprised if this wine needs a good seven or eight years of…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2003)

Good ruby-red. Smoky raspberry, ripe plum, coffee and a hint of menthol on the nose. Very sweet, fruit-driven wine, with thoroughly ripe flavors of raspberry and chocolate supported by solid backbone. Finishes with big, dusty tannins and excellent length.

2012 & 2013 Napa Valley: Too Close to Call (May 2024)

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is dense, powerful and packed to the core. Inky black fruit, spice, leather, cinnamon, graphite, espresso and mocha blossom nicely in the glass. This sumptuous, potent Howell Mountain Cabernet is just starting to soften. There are a fair amount of blenders in this vintage (21%) that add complexity.

O’Shaughnessy Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Howell Mountain: 2000–2015 (Apr 2018)

(14.9% alcohol): Bright, dark red-ruby. Expressive aromas of black raspberry, minerals and mocha lifted by captivating violet perfume. Boasts a compelling silky core of black raspberry, licorice and saline mineral flavors, showing substantial baby fat and early sweetness. This fruit was harvested very ripe (at 28 to 29 degrees Brix) yet the wine comes across…

2008 Red Burgundies (Mar 2011)

Good deep red. Reticent aromas of maraschino cherry and menthol, lifted by a tangy note of tangerine. Then brooding, deep and backward, with a distinctly medicinal quality to the dark cherry, fresh herb and licorice flavors. Dense and stuffed with material, but the most obviously tannic of the 2008 line-up from this estate. This has…
