Jackson Hole Wine Auction Charity Dinner at Alto (May 2009)

I went back and forth as to which of the two Reciotos but it was an impossible task as both wines were extraterrestrial. This was my last bottle of the 1983 Recioto Gran Riserva, a mythical, legendary bottle that more than lived up to expectations. I will never understand how a wine can be so…

Never a Dull Vintage in the Northern Rhône (Dec 2022)

Glass-staining ruby. Displays intensely perfumed red and blue fruit liqueur, licorice, floral and smoked meat aromas, along with building cracked pepper and Moroccan spice qualities. Offers deeply concentrated but impressively lively, mineral-driven cassis, bitter cherry, violet pastille and smoky bacon flavors that turn spicier with aeration. Subtly gripping tannins support a very long, incisive finish…

Bordeaux 2020: Saving the Best for Last (Feb 2023)

The 2020 Ségla is deep, pliant and super-expressive. The 2020 will be an absolute delight once it sheds some baby fat. Dark cherry, plum, chocolate, menthol and licorice are all amplified in the glass. This powerhouse Margaux has a ton to offer. It is a very serious second wine from the team at Rauzan-Ségla.

Thrice Is Nice: Bordeaux 2020 in Bottle (Feb 2023)

The 2020 Ségla was bottled in early June. There is a lot of precocity on the nose, quite a turnaround from its showing in barrel when it was far more backward. Black cherries, tinned prune, fig and just a very light licorice aroma. The palate is smooth on the entry with finely-chiseled tannins, moderate depth,…

2020 Bordeaux En Primeur: Almost Back to Normal (Jun 2021)

The 2020 Ségla is bright and energetic, with pretty floral and savory notes that lend striking inner perfume. A Margaux of total classicism, Ségla is nervy from start to finish. I very much like the energy here. As always, Ségla is presented en primeur, but only sold in bottle, a few years after the vintage….

Vingt-Vingt Vins: Bordeaux 2020 (May 2021)

The 2020 Ségla is quite backward on the nose initially, only reluctantly opening to reveal blackberry, graphite, sous-bois and subtle incense aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. A slightly more savory Ségla, well balanced with an appealing bitter edge/salinity on the finish that beckons you back for another sip. Lovely.
