Southwold: 2016 Bordeaux Blind (Aug 2020)

The 2016 Pavie is powerful and rich on the nose, and more decadent than the 2016 Angélus, featuring iodine-tinged blackberry and blueberry fruit and noticeable new oak, all lavish and sensual. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, and fleshy to the point where it masks the backbone underneath. It feels hedonistic on the finish…

2016 Bordeaux…It’s All In The Bottle (Jan 2019)

The 2016 Pavie is simply magnificent. Gracious, perfumed and exquisitely beautiful, the 2016 has it all. I can’t remember seeing a Pavie with this much translucent energy and nuance. Black cherry, plum, lavender, spice and menthol all infuse this explosive, young wine with tremendous character. In the glass, the 2016 is vivid, aromatically deep and…

A Century of Bordeaux: The Nines (Sep 2019)

The 1989 Grand Puy-Lacoste is a vintage that is not seen so often these days, long overshadowed by the 1990. Now at 30 years of age, it has a lovely, elegant but intense bouquet of blackberry, black olive, cedar and a touch of mint, all beautifully defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with fine…

Rockeries in Living Rooms: 1988 vs. 1989 Bordeaux (Jul 2024)

It has an uncharacteristically high-toned bouquet with black cherries, black olives, and plenty of mint (maybe too much so that it veers toward spearmint). The palate is medium-bodied with graphite-infused black fruit. It is redeemed by…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

Good full deep red. Expressive aromas of roasted red raspberry, tobacco, chocolate and sandalwood; hints of dehydrated fruit. Sweet, fat and smoky, with good depth but only moderate complexity; shows an obvious warm-vintage character. Finishes with fairly sizable tannins and a lingering roasted character.
