Red Burgundy ’16 & ’15: Superb Vintages, Different Styles (Jan 2018)

Full ruby-red. Riper on the nose than the Clos Prieur Bas, offering aromas of black and red cherry, licorice and violet. Juicy, intense and penetrating but not at all hard, with its dark fruit flavors enlivened by enticing minerality. Finishes with very suave tannins and excellent energy and lift. This is nicely balanced from the…

Red Burgundy ’16 & ’15: Superb Vintages, Different Styles (Jan 2018)

(made entirely from Rugiens Bas, the lower portion of which suffered from frost): Bright, dark red. Aromas of red cherry, kirsch and licorice. Juicy and penetrating in the mouth, with terrific mineral-driven energy contributing to the wine’s savory impression. No easy sweetness here but ripe, smooth, deep and flavorful. Finishes with serious but refined tannins…

Red Burgundy ’16 & ’15: Superb Vintages, Different Styles (Jan 2018)

The 2016 Pommard Rugiens 1er Cru is a powerful, burly wine. There is plenty of old-vines gravitas and structure, but the tannins are also quite tough in the early going. This is another wine that is going to need time to find its center of balance, but whether or not that happens is an open…

(just 9 barrels produced from 1.5 hectares; like the following wines, this had not been racked since July): Bright, dark red. Inviting scents of black raspberry and currant. Boasts lovely richness, breadth and sweetness, with its flavors tending toward black fruits owing to the concentration from tiny yields. Dense, structured and long, finishing with a…

Red Burgundy ’16 & ’15: Superb Vintages, Different Styles (Jan 2018)

Bright red-ruby. Pure, vibrant aromas of black raspberry and boysenberry are lifted by a whiff of violet. More discreet in the mouth than the Chaignots but with its imploded dark fruit flavors accented by high-pitched florality. Finishes pristine, firmly tannic and long, with a restrained sweetness and a sappy juicy quality.

Red Burgundy ’16 & ’15: Superb Vintages, Different Styles (Jan 2018)

Dark red with ruby tones. Slightly porty aromas of plum, dark raspberry and spices; just this side of too much. Sweet and plush on the palate, with its red and darker fruit flavors complicated by spices and earth. Every bit as accessible as the Côte de Nuits-Villages today owing to its smooth tannins, but this…
