2011 Vintage Ports (May 2014)

Bright ruby-red. Slightly high-toned aromas of blackberry, bitter chocolate, violet and licorice. Lush on entry, then densely packed and sweet in the middle, with fruit-driven flavors of kirsch, black raspberry and cassis nicely support by sexy oak tannins. Surprisingly dry and classic on the finish, with harmonious acidity giving the wine terrific balance.

Southwold: 2016 Bordeaux Blind (Aug 2020)

The 2016 Pape-Clément has a more understated but quite compelling bouquet of blackberry, wild strawberry, crushed stone and orange pith aromas. With aeration, it reveals impressive delineation. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannins. There is a core of licorice-tinged black fruit, but I detect just a soupçon of greenness on the finish, as if one…

2016 Bordeaux…It’s All In The Bottle (Jan 2019)

The 2016 Pape Clément is fabulous. Racy and sumptuous in the glass, the 2016 captures the style that now characterizes Bernard Magrez’s wines from his estate in Pessac. Specifically, the 2016 is wonderfully deep in the glass, and yet retains terrific freshness as well. A rush of dark cherry, plum, smoke, scorched earth, grilled herb,…

The 2009 Clarets (Jul 2012)

Bright medium ruby-red. Wild aromas of redcurrant, blueberry, mocha, smoke and game. Very rich and full for Margaux if a bit youthfully monolithic today following its silky entry, with black fruit flavors accompanied by medicinal chocolate and menthol elements. Has the stuffing and length to support its big, mouthdusting tannins. Offers impressive potential.

Bordeaux 2009: The Best Ever? (May 2010)

(a 60/40 blend of merlot and cabernet sauvignon; 13.9% alcohol; ITP 72; pH 3.81) Very dark ruby, with black highlights. The nose is distinctly stricter and more austere than usual for this wine, with fresh blackcurrant, violet and cedar aromas nicely lifted by a mineral note. Enters bright and fresh, with lively acids nicely framing…

A Test Of Greatness: 2009 Bordeaux Ten Years On (March 2019)

The 2009 d’Issan is endowed with an intense and classically styled bouquet, quite tight at the beginning but opening with black plum and bilberry scents. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, almost Pauillac in style with graphite infused black fruit and a long, black pepper and cedar infused finish. This represents the best showing…
