1995 and 1994 Bordeaux (May 1996)

Fabulous smoky, roasted, black fruit and tobacco nose, with a sappy urgency. Like liquid velvet in the mouth; gives a saline impression of extract. Very fresh and bright, with uncanny sweetness. Explosive finishing fruit buries the uncommonly fine tannins. One of the very few ’94s that truly stains the palate.

2005 Bordeaux: Here and Now (Apr 2021)

The 2005 Rauzan-Ségla is captivating right from the very first taste. Soaring aromatics and bright veins of minerality confer energy to this statuesque Margaux. The 2005 is still a very young wine. In fact, I would cellar it for a few years. I am blown away by its energy, vibrant and sheer character. Bright red-toned…

Vinous Table: Sorrel, Dorking, United Kingdom (Jul 2020)

We moved back to classic territory for the final wine that I bought myself, the failsafe 2005 Rauzan-Ségla. Having reviewed this wine recently, I have little to add. The aromatics are more generous than other Left Bank 2005s at the moment, delivering plush black plummy fruit, cedar and mint, this bottle perhaps demonstrating a touch…

2007, 2006 and 2005 Bordeaux (May 2008)

Good full red-ruby. Inviting, expressive aromas of plum, redcurrant, mocha, coffee, game, flowers and nutty oak. Sweet, fat and stuffed with fruit; quite silky in texture but a bit less refined than the 2006 in spite of its greater richness. Fairly full wine, finishing with lovely lingering perfume as well as slightly edgy tannins that…

2005 Bordeaux: Here and Now (Apr 2021)

The 2005 Pichon Baron is in a gorgeous spot right now. Aromatically expressive and open, the 2005 is so expressive. Cedar, sweet pipe tobacco, mint, dried flowers, mocha and sweet red cherry fruit all meld together in a creamy, wonderfully expressive Pauillac. A long, persistent finish with terrific saline energy rounds things out in style….

Looking The Part: Pichon-Baron 1953 – 2015 (Jan 2019)

The 2005 Pichon-Baron is showing impressively after 13 years. It boasts intense black cherry, raspberry coulis, graphite and mineral scents that gain intensity in the glass. There is nuance and detail here, perhaps more than any previous release of this Second Growth. The masculine palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin and an insistent grip in…
