The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2005)

Good deep ruby-red. Sexy aromas of currant, minerals and gunpowder tea. Densely packed and minerally, with uncompromising dryness and a firm edge of acidity. Very old school and in need of bottle aging, yet this already has considerable sex appeal.

The Best New Releases from Australia, Part Two (Sep 2011)

(98% shiraz and 2% cabernet sauvignon): Deep ruby. Highly aromatic nose offers black raspberry, cherry pit, potpourri and minerals. Dense, lush and sweet but very energetic, offering spicy red and dark berry, dark chocolate, rose pastille and licorice flavors complemented by spicy, sweet oak. Shows bitter chocolate and cherry-cola nuances on the extremely persistent, spice-accented…

New Releases from Australia, Part 1 (Jul 2007)

Ruby-red. Initially closed on the nose but aeration brings a complicated bouquet of raspberry, wild strawberry, creme de mure, sexy oak spices, woodsmoke, tobacco, vanilla and fresh flowers. A deep, sweet but precise midweight, with energetic flavors of red and dark berries, cherry compote, cinnamon, mocha and smoked meat, all wrapped in substantial but silky…

Good dark red. Wild, highly complex nose combines dried rose, minerals, smoked meat, tobacco and a note of caramel. Plush and smooth yet with terrific flavor definition and a light touch to its flavors of red berries, spices and dried flowers. Offers outstanding breadth and restrained sweetness, with a late note of tart red berries…

Burgundy With A Bit of Age: 2000-2014 (May 2019)

The 2013 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru seems to have closed down since I last tasted it – broody and introverted, certainly surpassed by Grivot’s two excellent Nuits Saint-Georges tasted alongside. The palate is medium-bodied, grippy and backward with a sullen finish. I have never been keen on this particular wine and that has not…

The 2013 Red Burgundies: Fascinating and Challenging (Mar 2016)

Bright red. Aromas of redcurrant, raspberry, red licorice, smoke and flowers. Suave and fine-grained; comes across as suppler than the 2014. Delivers lovely fruit sweetness but also serious medicinal reserve; will this shut down in bottle? Turned more tannic with air and showed its firm spine. This very fresh Clos Vougeot will need at least…
