Variations on a Theme: Burgundy 2020 Whites (Jul 2024)

The 2020 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru Hommage à Louis has a refined and focused bouquet. The oak is deftly integrated and has impressive mineralité considering the growing season. This is powerful and quintessential Les Clos. The palate is fresh on the entry with a concentrated and weighty opening. Fresh orange rind and light mandarin…

Life on the Margin: Chablis 2019/2020 (Oct 2021)

The 2020 Chablis Hommage a Louis Grand Cru has an already irresistible bouquet of beautifully defined yellow fruit, limestone, red apple and white peachy aromas. The palate is very harmonious, distinctly saline and quite powerful. The intense, spicy finish lingers in the mouth. This will surely vie with the Valmur for supremacy come bottling. Outstanding.

Variations on a Theme: Burgundy 2020 Whites (Jul 2024)

The 2020 Montrachet Grand Cru has a creamy nose with touches of white chocolate, almond and chamomile. However, considering the vineyard in question, I would have liked more mineralité and terroir expression. A bit of alcoholic warmth develops in the glass. The palate is well-balanced with a fine bead of acidity. Tightly coiled citrus fruit,…

Dance the Quickstep: Burgundy 2020 (Dec 2021)

The 2020 Montrachet Grand Cru is very well defined on the nose with Clementines, crushed stone, a touch of grapefruit and petrichor. It unfolds beautifully in the glass. The palate is well balanced with a slightly waxy opening, a judicious touch of spice, quite tangy towards the finish with a long ginger-tinged aftertaste. Powerful, for…

Further Inroads Into Burgundy 2020 (May 2022)

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin “Dix Climats”, matured in 40% new oak, has a bold, almost Chambolle-like bouquet, quite pure with touches of blue fruit emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and is fleshy with fine acidity. This is one of Drouhin-Laroze’s most plush wines this year, and probably only needs two or…

Dance the Quickstep: Burgundy 2020 (Dec 2021)

The 2020 Volnay Village is completely aged in used barrel. It has a transparent nose with lifted red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit with an underlying tertiary scent. The palate is more expressive than the aromatics with juicy ripe tart red cherries, quite citric in style with orange rind and a touch of bitter lemon…
