Focus on Barolo and Barbaresco (Nov 2011)

Good full red. Plum, menthol and minerals on the nose, complicated by marzipan and a medicinal quality. Fuller but less expressive than the Gallina, showing less fruit today. I don’t find the same mid-palate energy as in the 2009 version but Rivetti says this wine is actually higher in acidity. And it has more stuffing…

New Releases from Piedmont: The Stars Are Aligned (Oct 2011)

The 2008 Barbaresco Vigneto Starderi is the biggest, most powerful and also most complete of the 2008 Barbarescos here, but it will require considerable patience. Huge, massive tannins provide the backdrop to a core of expressive dark fruit, flowers, mint and licorice. This is a virile Barbaresco with plenty of stuffing to age well, but…

2017 & 2018 Napa Valley In Depth (Jan 2020)

Spottswoode's 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon has been simply tremendous on both occasions I have tasted it so far. Sweet red cherry, red plum, flowers and mint give the 2017 striking freshness to complement its decidedly mid-weight structure. The intense heat of the vintage caused ripening to slow down and yielded a wine with just 13.7% alcohol,…

2006, 2005 and 2004 Bordeaux (May 2007)

Red-ruby. Very ripe aromas of plum, redcurrant, raspberry and smoked meat. Ripe, plush and sweet; harmonious and pliant. Slightly medicinal red berry and licorice flavors show very good breadth, and the ripely tannic finish displays good length. Much more successful than the 2006.

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2003)

Deep, saturated ruby. High-pitched but rather mute aromas of blackberry, kirsch and licorice. Dense, chunky and tight, with cool, slightly medicinal flavors of raw berries and mint. Finishes with somewhat pronounced tannins.

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

Deep red. Currant, plum and coffee on the nose. Offers a slightly jammy roasted fruit character but also possesses a good spine of acids and tannins. A tad dry on the finish. Drink over the next ten years.
