2005 Bordeaux: Here and Now (Apr 2021)

The 2005 d’Armailhac is in a gorgeous spot today. Early signs of aromatic nuance have started to develop, but the 2005 has at least a handful of years of fine drinking ahead of it. Quite frankly, I am surprised how fresh the 2005 is. Dried flowers, cedar, mint, pipe tobacco and sweet red toned fruit…

2007, 2006 and 2005 Bordeaux (May 2008)

Bright ruby-red. Blueberry, chocolate and leather on the nose, which suggests a wider range of ripeness than the 2006. Unusually sweet and lush for this wine but in a youthfully sullen stage, hinting at sexy oak tones and some leafy high notes. Densely packed but tight and tannic today, with its structure dominating. This needs…

A Century of Bordeaux: The Threes (Aug 2023)

The 1963 Vintage Port from Taylor’s remains a fabulous “Everest” of a fortified wine. It is still limpid in hue and has a compelling bouquet with ebullient black and blue fruit, singed leather, clove and tobacco, still retaining its floral elements. The palate is beautifully balanced with layers of fruit undiminished by the passing six…

Vintage Port – The 2016 Declaration (Jun 2018)

The 1963 Taylor’s Vintage Port is lucid in colour, very well defined with wild strawberry, Clementine, leather and tobacco scents, one of the few to contain a floral element. The palate has a cashmere texture with wild strawberry, cherry and a touch of liquorice, leading to a dense and structured finish. Over several bottles encountered,…

Bordeaux 2011: Tales of Tannins and Terroir (May 2012)

Ruby red. Enticing aromas of ripe plum, cassis and chocolatey torrefaction. Then rather tight and austere in the mouth but still suave and smooth, with moderately ripe plum and spicy blackberry flavors. The moderately persistent finish shows a touch of greenness.

2007 Bordeaux : Don’t Hate Me Because I’m Overpriced (Jul 2010)

Bright ruby-red. Black cherry, licorice, leather and minerals on the nose. Sweet and pliant but slightly funky, with flavors of dark fruits, leather, tobacco leaf and herbs. With its rather silky texture, good breadth and restrained sweetness, this should drink well relatively early.
