The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2003)

Bright ruby-red. Rich, perfumed aromas of black raspberry, blackberry, minerals and cocoa powder. Big, dense, lush and deep, but with lovely sappy vinosity; this expands impressively to fill the mouth. Finishes very long, with suave, broad tannins and a note of black olive. A gloriously successful vintage for Sociando-Mallet, offering a full range of cabernet…

The Margaux Paragon: Rauzan-Ségla 1900-2015 (Apr 2019)

The 2004 Rauzan-Ségla was picked September 30 to October 15. It has a deep garnet core with just the first signs of maturation on the rim. The nose is beginning to open up and welcome secondary aromas: hints of warm gravel and sandalwood infuse the black fruits that are very expressive considering the vintage. The…

2006, 2005 and 2004 Bordeaux (May 2007)

Deep red-ruby. Black raspberry, cedar, tar and nutty oak on the nose, with hints of truffle and underbrush. Broad, silky and quite dry; classic understated claret that’s a bit youthfully tight today. The broad tannins are nicely buffered by the wine’s mid-palate material. Finishing flavors of red berries, tobacco and smoky oak.

2005 Bordeaux: Here and Now (Apr 2021)

In two recent tastings the 2005 Château Margaux has been nothing less than magnificent. A wine of stunning perfume and inner sweetness, the 2005 gradually opens to reveal layers of red-toned fruit intermingled with floral accents. It’s as if all the classic Margaux signatures have been amped up in a huge way. Dehydration on the…

2007, 2006 and 2005 Bordeaux (May 2008)

(bottled late, in November of 2007) Saturated red-ruby. Explosive aromas of plum, raspberry, bitter chocolate, coffee, almond paste and smoke; this smells voluptuous. Then extraordinarily opulent on the palate, with an almost marzipan-like ripeness. Coats every square millimeter of the mouth with a texture of liquid silk. The baby fat here is incredible, but there’s…

Ornellaia: A Major Retrospective 1985-2006 (Dec 2009)

The 2004 Ornellaia (magnum) has always been a beautiful wine, but stylistically it stands out quite a bit from other vintages of this era, something that is particularly evident in this tasting. The 2004 is perhaps the most delicate, feminine Ornellaia ever made. Silky tannins frame a perfumed core of ripe fruit all the way…
