Bordeaux at the Crossroads: 2023 En Primeur (April 2024)

The 2023 Montrose is a dark, brooding powerhouse but with the elegance that is such a signature today. Black cherry, plum, leather, licorice, mocha, spice, tobacco and dried flowers infuse the 2023 with tons of character. The Cabernet Sauvignon is so expressive here. Readers will have to be patient, as this is a wine built…

The Dalmatian Vintage: Bordeaux 2023 (Apr 2024)

The 2023 Montrose is focused on the original terroir of the estate, known as Terrace 4, located in front of the river. It comprises 45 hectares, around 12 to 15 hectares less than previous vintages so as to capture the expression of Montrose classified in 1855. Picked from September 5 to 28 and matured in…

Bordeaux 2010: The Dry Wines (Aug 2011)

Pale straw. Rather inexpressive nose hints at gooseberry, grapefruit, chalk and talcum powder. Much fruitier on the palate, offering ripe melon and fig notes. Finishes clean and moderately long. The yield here was a reported 30 hectoliters per hectare but I don’t get quite the concentration I would have expected from that crop level.

Southwold: 2016 Bordeaux Blind (Aug 2020)

The 2016 Lanessan has a pretty, peppermint-tinged bouquet that just needs a little more intensity. The palate is medium-bodied and quite firm and forceful, with chunky tannins and a rustic finish. Requires more finesse and charm, but maybe it just needs time. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting.
