2006, 2005 and 2004 Bordeaux (May 2007)

Bright ruby-red. Classic aromas of currant, plum, graphite and minerals. Suave and smooth in the mouth, with a compelling sweetness and lushness for the vintage. At once easygoing and wonderfully complex, conveying a powerful soil character. The finish is ripely tannic, sweet and very long. This is wonderfully expressive today but the young 2006 may…

Bordeaux 2009: The Best Ever? (May 2010)

Dark ruby-red. Precise though very ripe aromas of red fruits, licorice and minerals are complicated by Oriental spices. Then juicy, leanish and a bit tart in the mouth; began youthfully sullen but opened with air to show more seductive flavors of spicy dark plum, blackberry, soy sauce and underbrush. This finishes clean and long, with…

A Test Of Greatness: 2009 Bordeaux Ten Years On (March 2019)

The 2009 La Gaffelière has a rather over-the-top bouquet with smudged definition. It feels as if it underwent a warmer or longer maceration than its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly viscous texture on the entry, lower acidity than many Right Banks, glossy and honeyed in texture towards the finish. Not really my…

2016 Barolo, Part 2 & Late Releases (Oct 2020)

The 2015 Barbaresco Montefico Vecchie Viti is a great example of this site. Iron, smoke, crushed rocks, sage, mint and licorice bring out the wilder, savory side of this Barbaresco vineyard. Firm and muscular in the glass, with striking depth, the 2015 has so much to offer. It does need at least a few years…

1997, 1996 and 1995 Bordeaux (May 1998)

Very good full color. Lively, thoroughly ripe aromas of redcurrant, sweet butter, minerals and spices. A step up in concentration from the last two wines; full and sweet, with a mineral pungency brightening the fruit. Offers lovely finishing sweetness and dusty, ripe tannins that reach more of the mouth. Very rich but graceful wine.

Vertical Tasting of Chateau Cheval Blanc (Oct 2011)

(a blend of 56% merlot and 44% cabernet franc; 13% alcohol; 32 h/h): Bright ruby. Ripe, intensely pure black cherry, blackcurrant, floral and milk chocolate aromas. Enters silky and suave, with rich red cherry and blackcurrant flavors that give the middle palate a fruit cocktail quality. Almost more Pomerol than Saint-Emilion here, with a rich,…
