Focus on California’s North Coast (May 2011)

(a blend of 88% cabernet sauvignon, 8% merlot and 4% cabernet franc): Dark ruby-red. Aromas of crushed blackberry, liquid stone, licorice pastille, violet and graphite. Wonderfully sappy and energetic, with berry, licorice and stone flavors dominating. This extremely suave, sweet cabernet boasts terrific intensity and precision. Finishes with lush tannins and outstanding persistence. Screaming Eagle…

Champagne 2013: The Spring Preview (May 2013)

The 1998 Blanc de Blancs Clos du Mesnil has developed beautifully since I last tasted it. What a wine. For the first few years of its life, the 1998 seemed to lack personality, then, suddenly, seemingly out of nowhere, it blossomed. Today, the 1998 is rich, powerful and explosive, none of which was a few…

The 2013 and 2012 Northern Rhône Wines (Feb 2015)

Saturated ruby. An explosive, sharply delineated bouquet evokes fresh red and dark berries, Asian spices, candied flowers and incense, all lifted by a bright mineral overlay. Silky, sweet and utterly seamless on the palate, offering vibrant raspberry, violet pastille and spicecake flavors that spread out and gain depth with air. Manages to be both powerful…

2011 Red Burgundies (Jan 2013)

Deep, bright red. Subtle, pure nose offers black raspberry, black cherry, mint, menthol and a hint of citrus skin. Wonderfully silky and sweet but the black fruit flavors come off more savory than sugary owing to the wine’s strong limestone character. Finishes sappy, uncompromisingly dry and very long, with firm tannins and lovely mineral and…

2007, 2006 and 2005 Bordeaux (May 2008)

Red-ruby. Classic aromas of plum, raspberry, tobacco, smoke and warm stones. Sweet, lush and generous but with the brightness of the vintage. In an essentially easygoing style. Finishes broad and soft, with plenty of ripe, mouthcoating tannins and noteworthy persistence.

Bordeaux ’08: Far Better Than Expected (May 2009)

Deep purple-ruby. Pure nose offers blackcurrant, minerals and spicy bitter chocolate. Suave and rich, with flavors of blackcurrant and spicy plum. At once fatter and finer-grained than the 2007, with harmonious acidity buffering its voluptuous texture. The broad, mouthcoating finish features fine tannins, excellent length and a floral note.
