The Future’s Definitely Not What It Was: Bordeaux 2018 (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Cantemerle has an initially perplexing nose, very outgoing with predominantly red berry fruit that feels too oaky. Then it coalesces with aeration, though there is quite a lot of reduction in evidence. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and, again, mainly red fruit plus a touch of sea salt. Yet it lacks…

Bordeaux 2018: Not Back in Black (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Belgrave is a fairly straightforward Haut-Médoc. Black cherry, gravel, game and leather give this strapping, rustic wine a good deal of character. It would be nice to see more delineation and overall persistence.

The Future’s Definitely Not What It Was: Bordeaux 2018 (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Belgrave has a tightly wound bouquet of blackberry, damp earth, freshly rolled tobacco and a very light marine influence. The palate is sweet on the entry with saturated tannins and plenty of ripe black cherry and strawberry fruit, although it needs a little more complexity on the finish.

The Future’s Not What It Was: Bordeaux 2018 (Nov 2019)

The 2018 Haut-Batailley has a sweet, opulent bouquet of macerated black cherries, blueberry, hints of fresh fig and pressed violets. The palate is quite full-bodied, exerting a gentle grip on the entry, and the layers of black fruit are framed by supple tannins. The acidity is nicely judged here (pH 3.61), and it fans out…
