2006, 2005 and 2004 Bordeaux (May 2007)

Good ruby-red. Currant, black raspberry, cocoa powder and graphite on the nose. Silky on entry, then impressively sweet in the middle palate, with classic Pauillac flavors of currant, chocolate and graphite dominating. This boasts the sharp focus of the vintage’s best examples but can’t quite match the 2006 for consistent ripeness and mid-palate depth. Tannins…

The 2010 Clarets: A Modern Classic (Jul 2013)

Moderately saturated medium red. Aromas of cherry, menthol and tobacco, with a pretty rose petal note that reminded me of Burgundy. Juicy, lively and fine-grained, with modest flesh and a slight herbal astringency–but good intensity and clarity–to the red fruit flavors. Finishes with dusty tannins and good persistence. This should be flexible at the dinner…

2013 Bordeaux: Walking the Tightrope (Apr 2014)

The 2013 Lalande-Borie is a pretty wine laced with sweet red berries, crushed flowers, mint and spices. Pliant and generous, this mid-weight, gracious red impresses for its balance and classy personality.

Bordeaux 2013: Definitely Not the Vintage of the Century (May 2014)

Good medium ruby. Aromas of crunchy black raspberry, smoke, coffee bean and baking spices. Fresh plum and red berries show a clear herbal streak. Then richer and creamier on the palate, with good structure and grip to the flavors of blackcurrant, minerals and smoke. This closed up considerably in the glass and showed building tannins…

Red Burgundy ’16 & ’15: Superb Vintages, Different Styles (Jan 2018)

(less than 25% new oak here): Healthy dark red. Very pure but subdued nose shows some soil tones to go with the black raspberry and spices. Broader, drier and more classic than the Morey villages; perhaps richer but less expressive today and a bit dominated by its spicy oak element. Made from four parcels: La…

Bordeaux 2012: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (May 2013)

Deep ruby. Enticing spicy lift to the aromas of blueberry, peppermint, graphite and violet. Juicy, spicy and aromatic, showing moderate depth but good mineral intensity and definition to the dark berry fruit. Finishes quite dry, with a hint of greenness and building, slightly rough tannins.
