2017 Bordeaux – Mirror, Mirror on The Wall… (Mar 2020)

A real sleeper, the 2017 Cantemerle has turned out beautifully. Cedar, sweet tobacco, menthol, licorice and incense add pretty aromatic top notes in this super-refined Haut-Médoc. More than anything else, the 2017 stands out for its exceptional balance and alluring personality. This is a terrific showing.

The F-Word: Bordeaux 2017 (May 2018)

The 2017 Cantemerle has quite a sultry bouquet with blackberry, damp earth and tobacco scents that reluctantly unfurl in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin that frame quite voluminous black dusky fruit. There is a powdery texture to this Cantemerle, quite long on the finish even if it is missing the refinement…

2016 Bordeaux…It’s All In The Bottle (Jan 2019)

The 2016 Léoville Las Cases is a majestic, seamless, opulent wine. Yes, I am talking about Las Cases, traditionally one of the Left Bank’s most austere, forbiddingly tannic wines. Southwold: 2016 Bordeaux Blind (Aug 2020)

The 2016 Léoville Las-Cases was tasted from two bottles, this one more in line with prior experiences. It has a very detailed, powerful bouquet of blackberry, cedar, potpourri and iris aromas that soar from the glass. The palate is very well balanced with fine tannins, pitch-perfect acidity and a sense of harmony throughout. It fans…

Champagne: 2021 New Releases (Nov 2021)

The 2010 Brut Millésimé Amour de Deutz is a hard wine to taste, as the aromatics are unfocused and muddled to the point of making the wine unenjoyable. The shortcomings of this challenging harvest are impossible to escape.

1999 and 1998 Red Burgundies (Mar 2001)

Full ruby-red. Penetrating aromas of blackcurrant, black cherry, dark chocolate, minerals and red licorice, plus a whiff of old barrel. Juicy and penetrating but quite tightly wrapped. A wine of finesse rather than weight, but with subtle power as well. Finishes with chewy, chocolatey tannins and very good length. This will get dry if it…
