Vertical Tasting of Chateau Lynch-Bages (Jan 2012)

(78% cabernet sauvignon, 15% merlot, 5% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot; 3.76 pH; 5.08 g/l total acidity; 58 IPT; 13.3% alcohol): Deep ruby-red. Closed nose hints at blackcurrant, dark plum, smoke and dried herbs. Juicy and dense on entry, then bright and lively in the middle, thanks to vibrant acidity lifting the flavors of…

New Releases from Champagne (Dec 2008)

The 1998 Extra Brut Vintage Celebris is a beautifully focused, linear wine that sparkles on the palate with the essence of white peaches, pears, quince and flowers. This medium-bodied yet structured wine offers phenomenal persistence, along with chalky, minerally notes that give the wine its superb liveliness and sense of freshness. Like many wines in…

2001 and 2000 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2003)

Medium red-ruby. Warm, inviting aromas of smoky red fruits, tobacco and black pepper. Bright and gripping on entry, then juicy and brisk in the middle, with slightly medicinal red fruit, mineral and tobacco flavors and somewhat clenched tannins. A restrained Chateauneuf that’s currently hiding its flesh. But has a classic structure for aging.

2000 and 1999 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2002)

(bottled in July without fining or filtration) Bright red-ruby. Smoky, complex nose of dark berries, minerals, gunflint and roasted meat. Full, sweet and deep; not especially lively in the middle today but offers very good density and richness for the vintage, not to mention an extroverted personality. Then finishes with a note of almost mentholated…

A Test Of Greatness: 2009 Bordeaux Ten Years On (March 2019)

The 2009 Les Ormes de Pez feels a little smudged and lacked the precision of its peers on the nose: leather and sage, plenty of cedar and sandalwood with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, a fine level of acidity but just missing the requisite panache and nuance on the finish. Tasted at…

A Test Of Greatness: 2009 Bordeaux Ten Years On (March 2019)

The 2009 Les Ormes de Pez has a strange nose at first, a little distant and missing the same fruit intensity as its peers. There is a slight dustiness here that translates over the palate. Good fruit concentration and grip, just a touch of greenness around the edges with a welcome dash of spice towards…
