Northern Rhône: 2016 and 2017 Reds (Sep 2019)

Opaque ruby. An exotically perfumed bouquet evokes candied blue fruits, pungent flowers, spicecake and baking spices. Sweet and precise on the palate, offering intense blueberry, cassis and violet pastille flavors braced by a core of juicy acidity. Smoothly blends power and finesse and finishes impressively long and spicy, with harmonious tannins adding framework and gentle…

2007 and 2006 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2009)

Medium red. Spicy, inviting bouquet of strawberry and redcurrant, with sexy notes of potpourri and cola. Sappy, finely etched red berry flavors are deepened by cola and sassafras qualities. Very complex Cotes du Rhone with excellent finishing clarity and thrust.

(L09223; a blend of Bessards and Meal; bottled with a red capsule) Vivid ruby. Sexy, penetrating aromas of raspberry, candied cherry, incense and anise. Lively red fruit flavors are given spine by tangy minerality and show a suave note of candied flowers on the back half. The finish is spicy, nervy and extremely persistent. Faurie…

2008 and 2007 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2010)

Rich, palate-coating dark berry flavors are brightened by dusty minerals and become more floral with air. Quite rich but a touch backward today, finishing with a whiplash of…

Northern Rhône: Solid ’14 Reds and Outstanding ’15 Whites (Jul 2017)

Opaque ruby. Spice-tinged dark berries and candied licorice on the pungent, expansive nose. Sweet black raspberry, blueberry and spicecake flavors show impressive depth and pick up floral and smoky mineral qualities with aeration. Displays excellent clarity on the gently tannic, persistent finish, which features a lingering blue fruit note.

1998 and 1997 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2000)

Dark red-ruby. Reticent but aromatic nose hints at red cherry, pepper and flowers. Juicy and lean in the mouth, with a spicy character. The impression of slightly tart acids, combined with the wine’s modest fleshiness, leave it rather tough today. But here the substantial tannins are smoother. I’d like to have seen a bit more…
