2010 and 2009 Southern Rhone Wines (Jan 2012)

(66% grenache, 15% syrah, 13% mourvedre and 6% cinsault): Bright ruby-red. Ripe cherry and dark berries on the nose, complicated by smoke, licorice and lavender nuances. Fleshy and deeply pitched but surprisingly lithe, offering juicy black raspberry and cassis flavors and a hint of exotic spices. Closes with excellent clarity and grip, the dark berry…

2008 and 2007 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2010)

Glass-staining ruby. Subtly complex aromas of dark berries, cherry-cola, brown spices, licorice and smoked meat. Sweeter and lusher than the previous two wines, conveying an impression of riper fruit and greater depth. Spreads out nicely on the close, finishing with ripe tannins, impressive length and lingering notes of tarragon and cracked pepper.

2005 and 2004 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2007)

Dark red. Zesty red fruits on the nose, complicated by a floral quality. Tangy and focused, with intense redcurrant and cranberry flavors that deepen with air and take on a bitter cherry quality. This is very precise and pure; a vibrant tone carries through a taut, long finish, which features extremely fine tannins and a…

Vertical Tasting of Quinta do Noval’s Nacional Vintage Port (Nov 2012)

Full medium ruby. Deeply pitched aromas of cassis, black cherry and mocha. Sweet and fine-grained, combining a powerful structure with surprisingly harmonious, chewy black fruit flavors. Much thicker and denser than the basic 2003 vintage port served alongside it, and a level beyond that wine in fruit intensity. Finishes very long and suave, with tongue-coating…

Vintage Port – The 2016 Declaration (Jun 2018)

The 1980 Taylor’s Vintage Port has a deep, clear garnet colour. The nose is very backward, quite austere and conservative with notes of cherry and raspberry leaf, a touch of cigar box developing with aeration. It perhaps lacks a little joie-de-vivre, especially when compared to vintages in the 1970s. The palate is attractive though, with…

Vintage Port – The 2016 Declaration (Jun 2018)

The 1975 Taylor’s Vintage Port is mature in colour, lighter on the nose than either the 1970 or 1977 with wild strawberry, cherry, pencil lead and sawdust. No, it is not complex, but it is clean and fresh. The medium-bodied is more driven by fruit than other vintages and lacks a little structure, yet there…
