Chianti Classico and Beyond – 2018 & 2019 (Sep 2021)

The 2018 Tignanello is every bit as impressive as it was when I last tasted it earlier in the year. Blood orange, spice, black cherry and mocha lend an alluring exotic character to a Tignanello that sizzles with tension and energy. Silky, creamy contours play off classically mid-weight structure. Beguiling and beautifully layered in the…

Sharing Alike: Petrus 1947 – 2015 (Sep 2018)

The 2003 Petrus was born in a difficult vintage for Pomerol, although its blue clay a.k.a “smectite” soils probably gave Christian Moueix and Jean-Claude Berrouet a slight advantage given its propensity to retain moisture and prevent hydric stress. The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

($1; 500-$2,000) Deep, healthy red-ruby color. Multidimensional aromas of mulberry, plum, smoked meat, leather and mocha are at once vibrant and slightly wild. 2007 and 2006 White Burgundies (Sep 2008)

(bottled one week prior to my visit) Full medium yellow. Ripe yellow peach on the subdued nose. Fat and rich but quite dry, with a strong spice character currently dominating the wine’s fruit. Powerful but a bit lacking in precision. Finishes with a suggestion of warmth. This will probably be best for relatively early drinking.

Cellar Favorite: 1940 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande (Aug 2022)

The 1940 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande comes from a completely forgotten wartime season. Apart from mildew in July, the weather conditions were not as terrible as those that beset the Bordelais throughout most of the previous decade; however, châteaux were burdened by the occupying German army and shortage of both supplies and personnel. I was…
