2019 Bordeaux from Bottle: The Two Towers (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Dalem is quite attractive, if a bit understated in this vintage. Crushed flowers, sweet red cherry fruit, cedar, tobacco and mint open nicely in the glass. Dalem was far more flamboyant en primeur. It is still a pretty wine, but less opulent than it was back then. Red cherry jam, raspberry and mocha…

Omne Trium Perfectum: Bordeaux 2019s in Bottle (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Dalem offers almost Burgundian purity on the nose, where blackberry, bilberry, crushed stone and pressed iris petal commingle. The palate is beautifully proportioned and quite saline, with fine tannins and an almost pixelated finish, which delivers superb grip and density. This is an outstanding Fronsac that will live long in the bottle. Excellent.

2016 Bordeaux…It’s All In The Bottle (Jan 2019)

The 2016 Les Cruzelles is every bit as captivating from bottle as it was from barrel. Dense, pliant and inviting, the 2016 has so much to offer. Black cherry, plum, menthol, licorice, new leather and lavender all run through this super-expressive, pliant Lalande de Pomerol from Denis Durantou. The 2016 offers a striking combination of…

Southwold: 2016 Bordeaux Blind (Aug 2020)

The 2016 Les Cruzelles has quite a high-toned bouquet compared to the La Chenade, featuring black cherries, lavender, balsamic and light cedar aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Compared to previous showings, I found this a little angular in style, although with age, it will coalesce. Give…

2015 Bordeaux: Every Bottle Tells a Story… (Feb 2018)

Just as it was en primeur, the 2015 Côte de Baleau is pure class. Silky tannins, lifted aromatics and soft, caressing fruit meld together to inform a super-polished, elegant Saint-Émilion that speaks with a hushed, sensual voice. Readers who appreciate the more restrained side of Bordeaux will find much to admire.

2016 Bordeaux…It’s All In The Bottle (Jan 2019)

The 2016 Clos L’Eglise is endowed with tremendous density and lushness. Blackberry jam, chocolate, leather, spice and licorice give the 2016 much of its flamboyant, forward personality. Readers should expect a rich, explosive Pomerol built on textural resonance. The 2016 spent 18 months in French oak (300-500L barrels), 80% new. This is a terrific showing…
