2009 and 2008 Northern Rhone Wines (Jan 2011)

Deep ruby. B oysenberry, smoky Indian spices, licorice and violet on the nose. Then sweet, supple and expansive in the mouth, with strikingly deep flavors of dark berry and cherry compote, mocha and violet pastille. The endless finish displays fine-grained tannins and intense licorice and floral notes. This will age at a snail’s pace.

Vertical Tasting of Chateau Gruaud Larose (Apr 2013)

Medium-dark ruby-red. Spicy plum and cocoa aromas are lifted by floral and minty notes. Enters the mouth surprisingly rich, then turns leaner in the middle palate, showing fresh blackcurrant and chocolate flavors of modest intensity. The moderately long finish features mounting, mouthcoating tannins. I doubt there’s enough fruit here to support the tannins in the…

A Century of Bordeaux: The Twos (Sep 2022)

The 2002 Gruaud Larose is a vintage that I have not tasted for some time. It was matured in 30% new oak for 16 to 18 months. At 20 years old, it has an open bouquet, quite fragrant, mainly red berry fruit with iron piping, orange rind and saddle-leather scents, seemingly fully mature yet with…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2005)

Medium red-ruby. Slightly horsey aromas of currant liqueur, leather and smoke. Then sweet and rather easygoing in the mouth, with flavors of red berry syrup, coffee, chocolate and minerals. along with some herbal highlights. Conveys an impression of sucrosity and finishes with dusty tannins and good length. Compared to this wine, the 2001 and 2000…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

Red-ruby. Currant, leather and tobacco on the nose. Sweet, dense and thick, with considerable power for Lagrange. Ripe note of dark chocolate. I would have scored this higher but for a slight dry spot in the middle palate that carried through on the aftertaste. My bottle may not have been representative.

Lagrange 1959-2015 (Dec 2020)

The 2003 Lagrange was an early vintage picked from 11 to 24 September, the second earlier ever. For a 2003 it has an attractive bouquet with red cherry, cranberry, fig confit and dates, perhaps lacking typicity but there is nothing overblown. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy and rounded with light spicy notes,…
