Bordeaux 2010: All That Glitters… (May 2011)

(73% cabernet sauvignon, 17% merlot, and 10% cabernet franc; 13.2% alcohol; 60% new oak) Dark ruby-purple. Aromatic notes of Oriental spices and smoky vanilla add an extra dimension to the ripe red cherry and strawberry scents. Creamy-sweet in the mouth, but with nicely integrated acidity lifting the ripe red berry and red cherry flavors complicated…

Squares & Circles: Bordeaux ‘10 At Ten (Apr 2020)

The 2010 Langoa-Barton has a very pure and quite intense bouquet with black cherries, blueberry and star anis aromas that are typically Langoa. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, impressive body and grip with a liquorice-tinged, saline finish that maybe just lacks a little flesh and needs more on the aftertaste. Tasted from an…

The 2010 Clarets: A Modern Classic (Jul 2013)

Bright ruby. Sweet, high-pitched aromas of cassis and leather lifted by flowers. Ripe, chewy flavors of red fruits, spices, flowers and leather struck me as a bit Burgundian. Lovely depth and sweetness for this bottling. A big success in 2010, tactile and inviting from the start but with the stuffing and energy for mid-term aging.

Compare & Contrast – DRC & Leroy (Jun 2019)

The 2001 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru has a perfumed bouquet of lifted red currant and wild strawberry that is quite flamboyant for this vintage. I adore the plushness and the life-affirming definition. The palate is very pure and seductive, at first displaying slightly softer tannin than previous bottles, but it seems to gain backbone with aeration….

2002 and 2001 Red Burgundies (Mar 2004)

Deep red-ruby. Highly nuanced nose combines blackberry, dark chocolate, coffee and cracked pepper. Wonderfully thick and mouthfilling; extremely silky for this cuvee Very youthful flavors of blackberry, Oriental spices, cocoa powder, mocha, iron and pepper. Offers an uncanny combination of fat and grip. A great vintage for this bottling. De Villaine noted that the domain…

Vertical Tasting of Chateau Lynch-Bages (Jan 2012)

(a blend of 80% cabernet sauvignon, 12% merlot, 6% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot; 3.67 pH; 5.54 g/l total acidity; 63 IPT; 13.4% alcohol): Fully saturated deep ruby. Enticing, slightly high-toned aromas of red cherry, menthol and spicecake pick up considerable depth with aeration. Turns a little austere in the mouth, showing a cooler,…
